Oh America, how you disappoint me daily.

I’m so outraged that this Lane Bryant commercial was banned from TV.  A quick disclaimer: I’m not at all a fan of our over-sexed media and the way it affects youth, but that’s a different topic for another day. But I will defend the Lane Bryant commercial and here’s why:

So–a question for my fashionistas–How many Victoria Secret ads/commercials do you see in one day?  For me, too many.

I love that Fox and CBS banned the Lane Bryant commercial because they thought it was “too raunchy”.  Please, correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t CBS host the Victoria Secret’s fashion show on TV every year? Nice bias against curvy women, CBS and Fox.

So what bothers and irks me to the core, is that the Lane Bryant commercial is being banned from TV.

Honestly, compared to the raunchy sex Victoria Secret’s commercials practically shove down your throat, I have to say, Lane Bryant isn’t that bad.

Why was it banned? I’m DYING to know. I bet you my life’s savings that if the model in the commercial was replaced with Gisele or Adrianna, the ad would run everywhere.  Was it because the model in the commercial wasn’t a size 0? I think she’s sexy, gorgeous and I have more respect for Lane Bryant and the plus size models than I will ever have for VS.  I’m sorry, but America, really? Come on.

You do not alter a Vera to fit you……

“You do not alter a Vera to fit you, you alter yourself to fit Vera. ” As quoted by one of my favorites movies, Bride Wars, the name “Vera Wang” epitomizes everything a wedding dress should be.  From elegance and class, to timeless style and romance, Vera Wang’s wedding gowns are truly a work of art.  No other designer is on par with what Vera does for weddings.

Since Vera Wang wedding gowns are truly one-of-a kind, they usually come with a pretty hefty price tag.  But wait! I have wonderful news!

Vera Wang has just announced her new endeavor:  a collaboration with David’s Bridal to design a high-end line of wedding gowns at an affordable cost!  This collaboration, which will begin this coming year, is sweeping the wedding scene by storm!

All gowns designed for David’s Bridal will range from $600 to $1,500, with most coming in under $1,200. Wang’s regular bridal line ranges from about $4,000 to upwards of $25,000.  Eek!

You can get a Wang gown for under $1,000 at the yearly sample sale, that is, if you are willing to get in line days before the actual sale and camp outside the boutique.   That only proves how popular Wang’s wedding gowns are and how huge this partnership is for both her and David’s Bridal.

Since David’s Bridal controls about 30% of all wedding gown sales in the U.S and Vera Wang is the most popular name associated with wedding designs, this collaboration can be nothing but successful!  I’m excited for this and I have no plans to get married anytime soon! 🙂

Personally, I hope Vera Wang’s designs for David’s Bridal do not get too pedestrian, as snotty as that may sound.  There’s something overly romantic and beautiful about a couture dress I know I can never afford.  If all of couture gets too attainable, what is their to fantasize about?

All in all, I think Vera will keep it timeless and classy.  She always does.

She and Him.

Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward are “She & Him”.   An American Indie Folk band created in March 2008, Zooey and M. have taken folk music by storm.  Zooey’s infectious voice and M.’s raw musical talent hits you immediately.

I know this has deviated from my usual fashion posts, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you listen to them.

Zooey Deschanel is rewriting the script. With She & Him’s Volume One, her first collaboration with M. Ward, she proved that not only could she act, write songs, and sing, but she could do them all very well, with a sparkle of personality coming through in her gorgeous eyes and even bigger voice. Volume II, out now, packs an even bigger punch for listeners.  Zooey writes the lyrics, M. plays the songs.  Zooey + M.= shear musical nirvana.

Mix Master.

“Rap is rhythm and poetry. Hip-hop is storytelling and poetry as well.”

In my opinion, fashion is storytelling and poetry too.  For Spring 2010, why not make a declaration for fashion in this season’s must have piece? A statement necklace.

Statement necklaces are the perfect accessory to any outfit–especially simple,  jersey dresses.  Since statement necklaces do just that–make a statement, keep other jewelery and accessories to a minimum.  The necklace says enough!

This trend is definitely not intended for the wallflower! It will draw a lot of attention!  Statement necklaces can range greatly in price.  Some, from Forever 21, are under $20.  I have seen some necklaces with elaborate jewels and rhinestones retailed at over $800. This trend is both stylish and timeless!

As Barack Obama claimed, “The thing about hip-hop today is it’s smart, it’s insightful. The way they can communicate a complex message in a very short space is remarkable.”  The statement necklace can do the same for you!  So have fun with this trend for Spring/ Summer 2010!

Joomi of NYC $298

Mawi $770

Grand Dame --Forever 21-- $10.80

Feisty, feminine florals.

Those who know me know that I am never one to wear a trend without adding my own style/flavor/etc. to it.  So, the floral trend, which is blossoming all over Spring 2010 is no exception.

More and more florals are popping up all over the place.  Runways, thrift stores, department stores and boutiques all have spring fever.

As a girl with a curvier bottom half, some trends just do not work. (Ex: Rompers+Me=train wreck).  But, florals are something that can work with every woman, regardless of age and body type.  As mentioned previously in my blog, H&M has created a timeless Garden Collection for Spring 2010 which features many floral pieces.

Floral trends can be seen anywhere from high heel pumps to blazers to short dresses this season.  Personally, I find the floral blazer to be a piece that will not only keep you in trend this season, but follow you for many seasons to come.  The blazer–in its simplest of form, is classic and timeless.

Luckily in the fashion world, we are slowly entering some sort of acceptance— It is no longer about the brands you wear; it is about your creativity, individuality and overall sense of style FOR YOURSELF.  I’ve always dressed for myself, always have, always will.  If I so happen to spark someone’s interest–fabulous!  Either way, I love what I wear.

So getting to the point, my fashionistas!  Where can you find such fabulous florals? (Aren’t you loving my alliteration!?!)  I try to not break the bank when it comes to fashion so start at vintage/consignment stores.  You’d be amazed at what you can find.  Also, both Zara and Forever 21 have shown lots in floral pieces at moderate prices.

As one of my most favorite poets, Robert Herrick, once said :Our life is short, and our days run, As fast away as does the sun.

Just as the days run, so do the trends! Don’t miss out on this feisty and feminine (& timeless!) one!

Real girls have curves.

Real girls have had curves?!

I came across both these ads through Google.  I found the Skinny Girls ad particularly funny.  Women are under such pressure to be thin, but back in the 50’s, curvier was better.

What changed this opinion?  I blame media, modeling, and sample size crazes.  We could argue the reasons for hours but I thought I’d give you a little something to reflect on.

Spring Fever!

“Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s Party!’ (Robin Williams)–and party you shall in H&M’s new “Garden Collection” for Spring 2010.

Spring 2010 runways have featured tons of looks with flower details and vibrant colors.  With colors and patterns that scream “Spring is here!” and prices that everyone can afford, the Garden Collection by H&M is sure to please the masses.

I have seen the entire collection first hand and I have to say, I’m impressed.  Did I mention that the collection is organic? The Garden Collection was made using only organic and recycled materials. All the garments have been produced using sustainable materials or using recycled PET bottles or textile waste. With this new collection, these efforts constantly remind us that we can enjoy disposable fashion more responsibly. Fabulous and eco-friendly?  That makes me happy.

Each piece of the collection exudes softness and femininity–everything fashionistas want for spring! The dresses are show stopping, but hurry! They are selling out fast.  A few of the dresses have completely sold out in Atlantic City’s H&M (I was pretty bummed!).  So party on darlings and fall into spring in a fabulous way!

I'm DYING for this dress!

wonderful use of color!

“Just Do It”

In the past couple of months, both Nike and Reebok have pushed commercials and ads that target women in a disturbing way.  I don’t know about you ladies, but this commercial doesn’t say “go for a run and awaken your senses”.  To me, it just screams sex. With lines like “88% of men will be speechless, and 76% of women jealous”, what is the message these companies are sending?

The message says nothing about being healthy and being in shape for yourself.  The only message I take from this is if I don’t have those sneakers, I guess men won’t be speechless when they see me. I think I can live with that. Other ads have had pictures of breasts right in your face. Apparently, because the butt has been so toned due to Easytone sneakers, no one will stare at the breasts anymore. WOW! Pretty pathetic advertising if you ask me.

How much would you risk for fashion?

I recently came across this article from CNN.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/04/09/fashion.shoes.heels/index.html

In the article, the author discusses how far some women will go for fashion.  High heel shoes are being designed higher and higher–and women are feeling the pressure.

Dr. Kathleen Stone, president of the American Podiatric Medical Association, suggests giving the feet breaks during the day and changing into high heels at night. She advises against wearing heels that are higher than 2 inches but knows many are not likely to heed the advice. The health effects of high heels are well-known.

“It’s very difficult, not only on the foot, but the knees and low back,” she said. “The way the shoes put pressure on the front part on your feet, it applies compression on your toes and irritation to the nerves in the toes.”

Maybe I am a victim to that pressure, maybe not.  I’m going to have to reflect on that for a while.  Like I’ve said in my previous blog, my mantra has always been the higher the heel, the better.  And with that mantra has come years of pain in my feet.  Women are taught that “beauty is pain”, but at what cost?
